‘The Boys’ Director begged Elisabeth Shue not to turn down the ‘Cobra Kai’ show

The makers of Cobra Kai know how to get their fans excited by reuniting them with their favorite star from The Karate Kid Movie. Season 3 is the best example of this, as it features the return of Kumiko (Tamlyn Tomita) and Chozen from Karate Kid Part II (Yuji Okumoto). But it was Elisabeth Shue’s reappearance as Ali, a cameo that had been teased since the first season, that took all the limelight.

Shue stated in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that she was unaware of her part on Cobra Kai. At the time, Elizabeth Shue was working on the Boys show.

The Boys is a popular show on Amazon prime series developed by Eric Kripke for Amazon Prime Video. The show is Based upon the comic book of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. The show includes Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, and several other stars, including Elizabeth Shue (Season 1) and Directed by Dan Trachtenberg.

Elisabeth Shue was a part of the show before she even realised it.

Since Season 1, Cobra Kai has teased Ali and given her Easter eggs. When Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) was newly introduced to the internet, he started looking at Ali’s Facebook profile. He sends her a friend request, and the final shot of season 2 shows him checking his phone to see if his high school ex-girlfriend has accepted. Shue was not committed to the show at the time. They could only hope.

“‘Ali with an I’ is the original source of the rivalry between Daniel and Johnny, and we’ve referenced her throughout the years,” Schlossberg told app. “And so, from the very beginning, we knew that we would want to bring her in, that we would want her to be a force of good in terms of bringing them back together in this pivotal moment.”  

If Shue does not return to the show as Ali, the Cobra Kai writers will have to rewrite the plot to remove Ali from Season 3. Fortunately, this was not the case.

Shue stars on Amazon’s superhero series The Boys. Elizabeth Shue was pushed for Cobra Kai by Dan Trachtenberg, the director of “The Boys.” For Shue, The Karate Kid was just a movie she made as a young actor in 1984. But she had no idea how well-known she had become for her portrayal of Ali.

“To be honest, I really hadn’t thought about being on Cobra Kai,” Shue told EW. “When I showed up on the set of The Boys for the first day, Dan came right over and said, 

‘You’re doing Cobra Kai, right?’ I was like, ‘What? I don’t know… Do you think that’s a good idea?’ He goes, ‘Is that a good idea? You have to be on Cobra Kai!’ I said, ‘Why, why do you care so much?’ He said, ‘You have no idea how important The Karate Kid is in my life.'”

“He (Trachtenberg) told me what a great movie it is and how much he loved Cobra Kai, and that it would just be devastating – ‘devastating,’ he kept saying – for the fans and for the memory of The Karate Kid if I wasn’t [on the show]. I was like, ‘Whoa – okay!’ It was just very sweet, and it made me think, Oh, I haven’t really investigated this.”

Because of Dan Trachtenberg, Elisabeth Shue contacted the makers of ‘Cobra Kai.’

Her meeting with Cobra Kai’s creators went well, and the rest is history.

“Then I sat down with the three producers and writers who created it, Jon, Josh, and Hayden,” Shue told EW. “They were so lovely and similar to Dan — super Karate Kid fans. They really wanted to wait and have Ali come back this season, primarily, I guess, because it’s a reunion season. I said, ‘I’ll do whatever you need.'”

All thanks to Dan, who not only created blockbuster shows like “The Boys” but also assisted Cobra Kai in reclaiming its Ali.
